Who Are The Shipibo Conibo?
The Shipibo-Conibo are an indigenous tribe native to Amazon Rainforest of Peru, whose rich cultural traditions date back 2,000 years or more. Their traditions in textile art are often found featuring elaborate geometric patterns, which hold great spiritual significance to their people, and are a reflection not just of a vision, but how they see the world. These textiles can be found to reflect a profound narrative, interweaving the spiritual and material realms, and the connection between humankind and the spirits of nature.
Icaros
These vibrant, intricate patterns are more than mere decorations. They are visual representations of what is known as icaros—sacred spiritual songs, inspired by the spirits of the plants, and the ancestors who dedicated their lives to downloading wisdom from the plant realms.
Icaros hold incredible significance as conduits for healing, and as open channels to communion with the ancients. The textiles themselves act as physical embodiments of the melodies sung by Shipibo healers, with each design element symbolizing a different aspect of nature's harmony and the cosmos at large. Traditionally crafted by women, these fabrics serve not just an aesthetic purpose but also stand as a testament to a cultural practice that has survived centuries. Each thread spun is a note in an ancestral song that resonates throughout time.
